Endangered Species ActThe Bush Administration has been deemed the worst environmental cabinet. Lucky for us, we have less than 100 days until Election Day.  Bush’s latest proposal (whatever happened to the “Lame Duck” role?) is attempting to weaken the Endangered Species Act (ESA) that protects endangered species and habitats.

The proposed changes include cutting out wildlife experts who protect (often endangered) wildlife during construction or change to natural land & natural habitats.  (This proposed step would be similar to the government issuing new drugs on the market, but taking out the pharmacists from testing.)

What’s worse about the proposal is the explanation for turning around ESA - The act can give federal agencies the ability to assess the impact of greenhouse-gas emissions on protected species & habitats.  This is a slap in the face to all the positive changes made to fight climate change and enviro-dangers.

Additionally, one of the long term consequences of changing the ESA is the  precedent it sets for future laws. Especially if the same (i.e. Republican) party is elected in November, there’s more wiggle room taken out of environmental decisions.  Shouldn’t we  be setting the example by making strides to strengthen green laws?

At times, it may feel as though national laws and changes are out of your hands. So what can you do in Philly or at home?

  • Send an email via Environmental Defense Fund to President Bush against the changes.
  • Volunteer for local organizations – Play around on the web for eco-action groups in your area
  • Vote in November.  Elect Congressmen (and women) and a President who will make green decisions.

As well as which was the best administration. Which candidate for the 2008 presidential election has the best green policies? (In your opinion). Keep up the good work girls!

Thanks for the questions guys. Since Kevin’s the history pro, I haven’t checked all the previous presidental records on the environment – but I have been thinking of that a lot lately since Bush has been nominated as the worst. As far as the 2008 election goes, most environmental groups seem to be backing Obama at this point… But stay tuned Tom – we’ll be going into more details about the candidates in upcoming posts.
