Don’t leave your helmets at home! Tomorrow is the annual National Bike to Work Day – which is also a favorite in Philly. The League of American Bicyclists started Bike to Work Day in 1956 in hopes of showing the power of the bicycle. Riding bicycles is a healthy alternative mode of transportation and can save some gas money – and you know prices at the pump aren’t getting any cheaper.
Join Mayor Nutter in his 6th year and other public officials as a participant of this widely celebrated day of exercise. Here’s a preview of the morning schedule for Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 17:
Looking for something to do tonight? Night Market Philadelphia hits Fairmount Avenue between 19th and 22nd Street from 6 to 10 p.m. for a night of food, music, and art to kick off The Food Trust’s 2013 festival season.

Who loovveeesss your Philly parks? We’re in the midst of the 2nd annual Love Your Park Week, designed by the Fairmount Park Conservancy & Philadelphia Parks & Rec to celebrate our city’s diverse parks.
From May 11 – 18, Philadelphia hosts service projects, events, education programs, family activities & more. Festivities kicked off on Saturday with the Love Your Park Service Day, where hundreds of residents volunteered in their neighborhoods. With over 70 events, there’s something for music lovers, art lovers, nature lovers, yogis and more. (I personally love a good ol’ glass of wine & several plates of cheese in front of me in Philly parks, which I plan on doing again sooon enough…)

With Earth Day coming up on Monday, we have a guest post about an event to challenge your bottled vs. tap water knowledge. Elizabeth Kobert is a local coordinator for Think Outside the Bottle. She is a junior at the University of Pennsylvania.
What do water and national parks have in common? They’re both priceless public assets that should be free and accessible to all!

The Philly Farm & Food Fest returned to the Philadelphia Convention Center this past Sunday. Over 4,000 attendees chatted with local farmers, artisans & businesses.
The second shot at Philly Farm & Food Fest had a great mix of tastes, education & variety. The cheeses were mouthwatering, the sauerkraut was freshly fermented, and there was even crisp local apple cider.
I kicked off my locavore dream tour with a (Find out about how the Philly Farm & Food fest went, complete with awesome pics – after the jump.)
Are you a little too obsessed with Cirque de Soleil or sneak into Barnum & Bailey’s Circus when it comes to town? The good news is you can try the Fly School Circus Arts whether you’re a professional gymnast or despise most exercise.
I’m a notoriously bad athlete. Just to give you an idea, my short legs damned me to the back of the crowd and on the sidelines instead of ever being a sports captain. I’ve had kickball teammates tell me I’m not the best of the team but keep receiving invites to stay since I’m the fun, supportive teammate. Yet I took my nonexistent athletic ability and fear of heights, straight to the top of the trapeze.
Fly School Circus Arts – My Experience
Mary Kelly Rayel was nice enough to invite me to try a class. I figured it was a sustainable alternative to a typical night, so I gave my inter-Cirque-de-Soleil a shot. Find out more about the Fly School Circus Arts experience, after the jump!
Do you enjoy running, especially away from the exhaust pipes of cars and traffic?

The 5K Run for Clean Air is a certified-green run and zero-waste event, complete with (Find out more about the 5K and how to win FREE entry, after the jump!)
Philadelphia is participating in walk to work day! Get your legs moving, feel healthy and perhaps score some free stuff too.
We understand it may not be plausible to walk your entire commute. If you’re a road warrior commuting from the city to NJ and Philadelphia suburbs or vice versa – 95 and 76 aren’t exactly stroll-friendly. Don’t despair – you just need to walk 15 minutes of your commute to receive 25% off of 5K Run for Clean Air registration and 10% off loaves of bread at Metropolitan bakery, along with other great deals.
You’ll just need your…

We like to give you a variety of sustainable happenings around Philadelphia, occasionally from other voices. When we think about environmental leaders, religion may not be the first group to come to mind. However, Guest Blogger Sister Mary Elizabeth Clark shares an upcoming Eco Film Festival at Chestnut Hill College this Thursday.
On Thursday, March 14, Chestnut Hill College is hosting a FREE (and open to the public) Eco Film Festival from 8:30 – 5:30 PM in the East Parlor, St. Joseph Hall. This all-day film festival includes showings of five eco-related films, each followed by a brief discussion with an expert presenter including Gretchen Alfonso from Moms Clean Air Force, and Logan Welde, Clean Air Council of Philadelphia.
