It’s holiday and party season! Entertaining guests can get hectic when everyone has cups, cans and glasses.
Here’s a couple of ideas to reduce water & waste when entertaining & imbibing:
Do you plan ahead by defrosting food on the counter or use a microwave 5 minutes before dinnertime? 
(OR if you have to defrost some turkey, tofurkey, or meat/etc this Thanksgiving…)
Try planning ahead & defrosting frozen foods in the refrigerator instead… You’ll lower the fridge’s temperature, saving you energy (and money!)
We all have those old towels and blankets and towels that are too old for Goodwill or Salvation
Army.
Instead of throwing these out, donate them to a local animal shelter or humane society. PAWS is located right at 2nd & Arch (and loves fleece blankets since they dry quicker!) or 2900 Grays Ferry Avenue & PSPCA are great local candidates to contact! What a better idea for those rapidly approaching holidays for pups & cats?
It’s fall! What a better time to re-check your junk mail and minimize where you can. With iPhones, Blackberries, Facebook & the internet everywhere, it’s too easy to find people or businesses, and shop online. Do you really need phone books, credit card offers and glossy printed catalogs dropped off at your front door? Save the 1000′s of pages used for each dinosaur-era book:
While venue hunting for my wedding, I had a moment of pure disappointment while discussing stemware (of all things.)The wedding coordinator at an unnamed venue in South New Jersey informed me that they only use plastic cups for all beverages served at the open bar. What?! I’m certain my disapproval showed on my face, as the wedding coordinator announced she would direct this part of the conversation at my fiance.
Here’s the thing… I’m not trying to call any friends or family out but our crew will certainly toss back a few spirits at the wedding. Let’s say we invite 150 people and each guest enjoys 3 beverages during the 5 hour reception – that’s 450 cups! (Assuming that people don’t reuse their previous cup and I certainly wouldn’t expect them to remember to do so.)
So, suffice to say that place was out of the running. As mentioned here re: save the dates my fiance and I – like many GPB readers – are trying to keep waste at a minimum.
