Design for Social Change: What’s Happening in Design Today

How can the design world address such issues as poverty, clean water management, health, transportation and equality for building a better city?  Graduate Studies at Moore College of Art & Design aims to answer this question with Design for Social Change: What’s Happening in Design Today, a DesignPhiladelphia event moderated by Jeremy Avellino. Design for Social Change: What’s Happening in Design Today will be held on Friday, October 14, 6:30 pm, in Moore’s Stewart Auditorium, 20th Street and The Parkway.  Admission is free, but registration is recommend at moore.edu/designforsocialchange.

According to Francine Martini, Interior Design assistant professor, ‘Moore is strongly focused on community, and social innovation in design is about building better communities and enhancing peoples’ lives through interdisciplinary design efforts. We are taking a look at DesignPhiladelphia’s theme of ‘Home’ in the broad sense of the word – Philadelphia’s community.  It’s a natural fit for Moore to look at ‘Home’ through this lens.”

Jeremy Avellino is a certified Passive House Designer and founder of Bright Common in Philadelphia, which he started to continue an exploratory collaboration of beauty, truth and play in the built environment. His deep green sensibility and experience in both traditional architecture and design-build firms helped him work in residential, commercial, non-profit and institutional sectors. As a Registered Architect and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional, his main work is fostering a trusting, mutually beneficial relationship between partners (clients), builders (makers) and the Earth we inhabit. Avellino holds a BArch from Philadelphia University.
