Walk-Transit-Score-PhiladelphiaStop hating on SEPTA… Philadelphia’s public transit has just been given props!

Walk Score, a website that rates the walkability score (to rank where you can drive less & live more), ranked Philadelphia 5th for residents’ access to public transit with a transit score of 68!  We fall behind New York, San Fran, Boston & DC.

How did we snag the #5 spot?  According to PR Newswire, “Walk Score assigns a “usefulness” value to nearby transit routes based on frequency, type of route, and distance to the nearest stop on the route.  City scores are then calculated by applying the Transit Score algorithm block-by-block throughout the city and weighting the scores by population density.”

Walk Score credits the Millennial generation (born 1980-2000) seeking shorter commutes & sustainable transportation options with the increase of public transit.  (Go us!)

Riding public transit is very convenient as gas prices rise, and also can give you time to check email, read a newspaper or book, or take a cat nap. Need some more feel-good reasons to take public transit?

  • Public transit saves individuals an average of $10,000 per year
  • Americans took over 10 billion trips on public transit in 2011
  • The avg number of vehicle miles traveled by US 16-34 yr olds decreased 23% between 2001- 2009.

Walk Score already gave Philly a walking score of 98 (Walkers’ Paradise).

    SEPTA could pull ahead with a few improvements, e.g.,

    1. Connecting the subway surface trolleys with waterfront light rail lines via Market St.
    2. Restoring trackless trolley service to routes 79 and 29 in South Philadelphia.
    3. Restoring trolley service on Route 23.
    4. Putting more service on bus route 40 (Lombard and South Sts. and West Park.) Service on this line is poor.
    5. Sending some of SEPTA’s employees to Charm School.
    6. Installing many more benches at transit stops, particularly at transfer points.

    Restoring the trackless trolley on Route 29 would shorten the current route to Front instead of Pier 70. Unless you figure they would run lines down and around Home Depot?

    Restoring the 23 to the epic trolley line that it should be would probably cause a lot of problems and slow the line down considering if a bus needs to detour, it’s able.

    Wishful thinking on the 23. I doubt the 29 and 79 will ever become a trackless or rail trolley…

    Yep, we agree there’s a potential for many improvements for SEPTA, but I’m guessing the bus routes give access to the majority of center city. Although it’s not perfect, we’re better off than other cities!

    And it would definitely help for the subway lines to be cleaned up… They’re definitely subpar for quality and cleanliness…
