According to a 2012 survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, Philadelphia is one of the top 4 cities in the Northeast with the least amount of car commuters, ranking 4th behind New York City, Washington, and Boston. Philadelphia ranks 5th in the country, behind San Francisco.

Here’s the breakdown of those who choose not to commute to work by car: 2.3% bike, 8.2% walk, and 26% take transit. This survey does not include those who commute to school or for a recreational activity. This comes as no surprise to us, considering Philadelphia’s public transportation system was ranked #5 in the nation last year. And with SEPTA implementing free Wi-Fi to subway, trolley, and bus commuters and unveiling a new official SEPTA app, perhaps this percentage will rise.
