National Bike to Work Day Is Back Tomorrow, May 17

Don't leave your helmets at home! Tomorrow is the annual National Bike to Work Day - which is also a favorite in Philly. The League of American Bicyclists started Bike to Work Day in 1956 in hopes of showing the power of the bicycle. Riding bicycles is a healthy alternative mode of transportation and can save some gas money - and you know prices at the pump aren't getting any cheaper. Join Mayor Nutter in his 6th year and other public officials as a participant of this widely celebrated day of exercise. Here's a preview of the morning schedule for Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 17:

Bicycle Coalition Holiday Ride: Take a Merry Spin tomorrow!

Ready to kick off your holiday spirit this week? Join the Bicycle Coalition's Holiday Lights ride tomorrow night in South Philly! Bicyclists are encouraged to decorate their bikes with lights for a 2-wheeled traveling caravan. Over 80 people have already signed up for the ride which should be about 10 miles (but riders can peel off at any time as long as they tell their ride leader). After the ride, cyclists are invited to eat at the restaurant afterwards (with the best-holiday-decorated-biker getting a free meal!) Here's the official details:

Those Who Bike Philly Pay Attention: Complete Streets Bill

Attention all those who bike Philly streets: The Complete Streets Bill is up for discussion in City Council TOMORROW, Thursday 15th. Councilman Mark Squilla, the  Mayor's Office of Transportation and Utilities, the Streets and Law Departments, and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia all worked together to improve those often rowdy biker-car-pedestrian relations. Heck, maybe they even were inspired after reading my rebuttal to Carrie Denny's infamous "Cyclists suck, my gas-guzzling SUV rules all Philly Streets" Philly Mag post. (Maybe Philly Mag even got the point since they mentioned this bill is even good for cars.) The bill has 2 main goals:

Ride Bikes Car-Free Through Philly on Sept 11th!

Bike Philly 2011, aka YOUR chance to ride car-free on Philly Streets (ahem minus Carrie Denny's SUV...), is brought to you by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. You can bike car-free for 10 or 20 mile loops, or bike a 35-mile loop (which includes some shared roads.) Routes go through Philly landmarks including Chinatown, Olde City, by the Ben Franklin bridge, the Zoo and other awesome scenes. The 5th annual event supports (find out who, what & how to participate, after the jump!)
