What: Earth Day at the Academy

When: April 22, 10am at Academy of Natural Sciences

Details: Get your science on and explore the world of water pollution, climate change and more. The Academy of Natural Sciences hosts Earth Day at the Academy. This is an ideal event for the whole family. Chemists, engineers and other scientists and experts will be there with their equipment including fish tanks and watershed models to provide a hands on demonstration. Free with museum admission. Visiting the Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise Ship in Penn’s Landing

This past Saturday, I toured Greenpeace's 50-meter Arctic Sunrise at Penn's Landing for their Coal Free Future Tour. This month-long tour, also hitting up Wilmington, NC, NYC & Boston, is teaching the Northeast about the major impacts the coal industry has on the environment. Regardless of the campaign & political jargon, "Clean Coal" in an oxymoron. Coal is dirty by production, the single largest source of carbon dioxide pollution in the US & the largest source of mercury emissions in the country. Pollution from coal-powered plants is responsibly for 13,200 deaths per year, (Treehugger) (1359 from PA alone), 20,000 heart attacks, 217,600 asthma attacks, and more than 1.6 million lost work days per year. "Clean coal" is a technology that will cost billions to test and wouldn't be ready for decades. (Find out more about Greenpeace & the Coal Free Tour after the jump!)

Philly's 3rd Annual Spring Cleanup had its biggest cleanup ever thanks to greenies like you with its UnLitter Us Campaign! Over 11,000 volunteers worked at 231 official project sites to collect over 1.3 million lbs of trash, 140K lbs of recycling, 50 parks & recreation centers cleaned and 763 neighborhood blocks cleaned! Incredible numbers, Philly! But how can you keep it up for this Earth week (and always...) Here's some suggestions:

No More Plastic Bags, Philadelphia! (almost…)

Good news - Philly is thisclose to banning an environmental catastrophe - in the form of plastic bags. Yesterday, Philly's City Council's Committee on the Environment voted unanimously to approve legislation banning plastic bags used in supermarkets, pharmacies and stores. The typical plastic bags must be replaced after July 1, 2011 with recyclable paper bags, compostable plastic bags or reusable bags. Part of the ban will also include

Another win for the Phillies boys and girls: Citizens Bank Park is #1 on PETA's Top 10 vegetarian friendly ball parks. Our home stadium was the first ballpark to offer veggie fare (and recently added more choices) on TOP of being one of the most green stadiums with their Red Goes Green Campaign. The Phillies stadium serves tasty veggie options like:
