Q: I see the term “fair trade” on products. I know this is a good thing but what does fair trade really mean?

A: The term fair trade refers to the movement that helps farmers or producers experience better trading conditions. Essentially, the approach focuses on exports coming from developing countries to developed countries and emphasizes paying the producers more (and more fairly.) Read on!

Phillies are Becoming Greener, Host eCycle Event Saturday 6/25

As you loyal Green Philly Blog readers may know, Beth & I are avid Phillies fans. (Case in point: see insert below as we celebrated World Series Victory in ’08.) While the Phillies are lovable for so many reasons (my fav Chooch?!?), their green ambitions are certainly noteworthy between their Red Goes Green campaign, Pitcher Ryan Madson (ahh) greening his home and awards for being most veggie-friendly by PETA.

Not to be done by the Linc’s ambition to be the Greenest Stadium in the World, the Phils have stepped up their eco-game yet again.

Hot topics of 2010 include green infrastructure and clean water – But in particular, the addition and/or substitution of green spaces has been quite controversial. Senior resident of Urban Land Institute Ed T. McMahon states “Green space adds value to property.” Not only would these areas of conservation drive economic trends upward, but also improve the overall health of the community surrounding. For example, substituting things like golf courses for conservation areas would essentially increase surrounding property value while diminishing overpriced maintenance fees – Same as airports and other large acre-eating developments.

Popped! Music Fest in Northern Liberties

Come check out the Popped! Music Festival on Saturday, June 20th from 11 AM-8PM on the 600-1100 block of 2nd Street in Northern Liberties!

Tons of free live music and over 60 vendors are participating.

Of course, Popped! has an emphasis on sustainability with all recycled paper products, recycling bins for plastic bottles (and encouragement to limit use, encouraging public transit and interactive exhibits to educate attendees to get green.
